The ringtone (audible ringing, also a callback tone) is a signaling tone in telecommunications that the caller hears while the destination terminal alerts the receiving party. The tone is usually a repeated cadence similar to that of a traditional powerful ringing signal (ringtone), but it is usually not played synchronously. Several telecommunications groups, such as the Bell System and the General Post Office (GPO), developed standards, which were adopted in part by the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) and other standards bodies. With modern mobile phone and smartphone technology, the ringtone can be customized and even use for advertising.
